Surgical Treatment for Breast Cancer

Woman Undergoing Surgery for Breast Cancer

Surgery is used to remove cancerous tissue from the breast and is typically the first course of action. There are different types of surgery:

  • Lumpectomy: A procedure that removes the cancer and some of the tissue that surrounds it.
  • Mastectomy: This involves the removal of the entire breast while a ‘modified radical mastectomy’ removes muscle from the chest wall and some lymph nodes from beneath the armpit.
  • Oophorectomy: Also known as prophylactic ovary removal, this procedure involves removing the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
