Surgery is used to remove cancerous tissue from the breast and is typically the first course of action. There are different types of surgery:
- Lumpectomy: A procedure that removes the cancer and some of the tissue that surrounds it.
- Mastectomy: This involves the removal of the entire breast while a ‘modified radical mastectomy’ removes muscle from the chest wall and some lymph nodes from beneath the armpit.
- Oophorectomy: Also known as prophylactic ovary removal, this procedure involves removing the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
